Neil Butler is the founding member of the team, having set the business up in August 2011. Initially trading as Xera Consulting and, subsequently, The Biz Whiz, he decided to bring the two business streams together in 2018 to market the services under the new Untypical Thinking brand.
As Neil says, “There are literally thousands of small consulting groups operating across Australia and, if we are to be successful, we need to be able to distinguish ourselves from the others. One of the hallmarks of our approach is to do things differently to these other groups. We want clients – and potential clients – to be able to look at us and see that we ARE different. For starters, we don’t want to compete with the others. We don’t want to walk down the path that every other business has been down. We don’t want to follow a process that looks great on paper but, in fact, is just another ‘cookie-cutter’ methodology. We believe in the ‘one size fits one’ approach to dealing with our clients. We absolutely disagree with trying to force-fit our clients into a pre-determined methodology – if all of our clients were the same, we might think differently. Playing ‘follow-the-leader’ is easy and probably accounts for why so many consulting and coaching businesses are simply ‘more of the same’.”
Outside of the Untypical world, Neil has a passion for community broadcasting, presenting music programs and commentating VFL football on a regular basis. He is the father of two very talented adults – one school teacher and one property research analyst. All three of them love watching the Brisbane Lions in the AFL. Neil loves good coffee, good red wine and the very best music from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s
