N for Normal and Now

Neil ButlerUntypical Thoughts

So, what do we mean by normal these days? I posed the question a few weeks ago – what is the new normal? I answered my own question with this – it is whatever you want it to be.

On an individual level there will be more opportunities than ever to develop new skills and undertake new activities. Traditional roles will disappear to be replaced by the utilisation of skills and experience from across the organisation – the right person for the activity rather than a task being assigned to someone who holds a specific role in a business.

Across organisations, normal will be defined by the decisions that organisations make now. No longer constrained by the existing policies, procedures, processes or protocols, businesses can now look to a future state that truly suits the needs of their customers, their employees and their shareholders. But the key word here is NOW.

The longer that you allow the current Business Continuity phase to continue, the more normal it will become. Businesses will default to what they are doing now because it seems to be working adequately.

But now is the time to take a Transformaginative approach to the future of your organisation. Now is the time to consider what your future could be rather than what it should be.

Don’t just let the weeks and months pass you by. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to transform your business. Don’t just accept the current state as the pseudo-future state.

Be decisive. Now.
